At the northernmost edge of Sifnos

Today, go for a walk to Herronissos, the northernmost end of the island, with a small, very sheltered beach. Very small and very sheltered! It has only two taverns and a small grocery store, it has sand and tamarisks, and it has places where you can avoid the sand. Picturesque, with wooden fishing boats, cool waters in many shades of blue and the perfect photo frame when viewed from above!

Before you go down to the beach, swim, eat and then don’t want to move, make the effort to climb to the top of the hill. The walk, which starts from the car park above the beach, climbs up an easy dirt road that eventually stops to give way to the old path that leads up to the top, to the chapel of Saint George with its welcoming courtyard. It will take about half an hour to the top, maybe a little less. From the church, if you walk north and along the edge of the cliff you will also see the ancient tower of Chersonissos, a circular building with very large stones. And, yes, you are on the northernmost edge of Sifnos! The slightly downhill way back will be a breeze and the view of the settlement and the bay of Chersonissos is worthy of many photos!

Cherronissos

One of the smallest and most protected beaches of the island, at the northernmost end of the island, 13 km from the central villages, you will find Cherronissos. When it’s windy elsewhere, Herronissos is ideal, precisely because it’s a very sheltered bay. In the few meters of sandy beach, no more than 40, you will find a big tamarisk and two or three smaller ones, a few benches and lots of towels! Sunbeds don’t fit! The water, in many shades of blue, is of course crystal clear and cool, while the sand looks like coarse spices!

On the left side of the bay, a small concrete jetty welcomes fishing boats and kids going for a dip.

Near the water you will find the few shops of the village. Two taverns, a mini market and one of the most traditional pottery workshops of the island. Sometimes you can see fishermen cleaning nets or tourist boats avoiding the strong wind for a while.

The wooden boats of the locals and the small fishing boats give a special colour and are points of reference when we “race” to swim!

What about pebbles today?

Today choose a place without sand. It doesn’t have to be on the rocks since we have choices with pebbles. Not many but enough! One of them is Vroulidia. The access is quite difficult and tricky, through a steep road, but the beach is wonderful, the water colours gorgeous and there are many sunbeds to rent and lay your body comfortably. There is a café and a tavern. To arrive there you should take the way to Cherronissos and after Troulaki settlement you will see the signs for Vroulidia, leading to a cement road on your left. A few meters before the very steep part, you have the choice to park the car and continue on foot.

The other choice with pebbles is Saoures, a tiny little spot on the right side of Chrysopigi rock. It is kind of hidden, you can’t find it at a glance, you need to walk a few meters to see it. The colours of the crystal waters in different shades of blue will impress and magnetize you. It is a smaller than tiny bay, no more than 20 meters, without any shops or sunbeds, very quiet. The closest place you can find something to drink or eat is the two taverns at the other beach of Chrysopigi, Apokofto, on the other side of the rock. It is a 10’ walking distance from Saoures.

SUNSET RESTAURANT

There’s this restaurant up north for those in the know.

Drive towards Herronissos to reach Troullaki –a small village– around sunset. Hit the brakes as soon as you see a raised terrace! This is… the ‘Sunset at Troullaki’ restaurant.

The whole menu is more than simply delicious… It’s exquisite. Home-grown vegetables, select meats, hearty portions and a cellar brimming with the latest of the best Greek wines. Relish sunset in the wild of SIfnian countryside, for when your meal arrives you’ll just lose your mind over it… and miss the sunset too!

Side note: When north wind blows, the place is calm.

Cheronissos village

The toponym Cheronissos means the part of land which is washed by the sea and which is connected with the mainland from only one of its sides. At the past, it was a very vivid settlement of potters.

It is a beautiful village of fishermen, protected in a small gulf, which maintains a unique simplicity. The two taverns on the beach are literally built on the sea. Whichever moment of the day you visit it, you shall be surprised by the calm, which is interrupted only by the sound of the fishing boats passing by the little port. It is not accidental that many of the residents of Sifnos have little houses here, which they use as summer, country houses.

At Cheronissos there are rooms and apartments to let, picturesque fish-taverns, cafe-snack bar and a mini-market. At the small pottery which is open by the sea, one can find beautiful handmade utensils of traditional Sifnos’ art, manufactured with unique inspiration. Do not loose the opportunity to genuflect in the beautiful picturesque little monastery of Ag. Polycarpos, on the beach!

Cheronissos beach

On the northernmost part of the island, in the picturesque fishing village of Herronissos, there is one of the most protected by the waves beaches.

Beach

Fine sand, shade from tamarisk trees and few sun loungers and umbrellas. Here, you will find well-cared changing rooms, showers and toilets. In the middle of the beach but also at the end of the mole there are fish taverns with tables on the seafront. On the right side of the bay, there are smaller moles which are ideal for those who want to be more secluded.

Sea

Clean sand with few stones on the left and right side of the bay. The depth is small for quite a few meters, making it ideal for water games.

Vroulidia

A medium sized pebble beach on the northwest side of the island, with really gorgeous emerald waters. Don’t let the stones put you off! The shop owners have created a comfortable sandy walkway leading to the sandy seabed!

Beach

Large pebbles and sufficient number of deck chairs and umbrellas. At the edges of the beach there are cafés and restaurants with tables by the sea.

Sea

Clean sand can be found after you pass the first meters which are covered with stones (there are landscaped walkways from sand). The depth increases gradually and the water is really wonderful.

Tip:

There is no mobile reception in Vroulidia except a spot at the end of the beach where there’s a chair which bears the marking “Cosmote”! (Greek Mobile Phone Company)!
