Hiking on wonderful routes
If you are interested in hiking, for routes of 3 – 4 – 5 hours, you have come to an ideal island! The entire western part of Sifnos, an area of 20,000 acres, which includes the highest peak of the island (690m. ), many monasteries and chapels with the most popular being “Ai Nigias o Apsilos” (Prophet Elias), farmland and “cedar forests”, many crossing paths and routes of varying difficulty and duration, is an ideal area for hiking in the summer because it is green and cool even when the rest of the island is yellow and dry. The main reason is the “fida” in local dialect, a kind of cedar (juniperus-juniperus) that in its wild form appears as a large bush 2 – 2.5 meters high and gives you the feeling that you are actually walking in a forest!
The Sifnos trail network, www.sifnostrails.gr has good signage, a website, a mobile app and a printed map. All are extremely helpful, not just for this particular area but for the entire network of 100 km of marked trails on the island. Alternatively you can talk to a guide so you can also learn things along the way about the plants, crops, farm buildings, chapels you will encounter, ancient towers, limestone chimneys and the history behind each route.
