At Agios Andreas, go for the history and for the view

One hill, an ancient acropolis, and all of Sifnos spread out before you.

Agios Andreas is one of those places that remind you that Sifnos has many layers. It is not only the present day, not only villages and beaches. It is also the centuries that have passed over it and, somehow, left marks in stone.

At the top of the hill is the archaeological site of the Mycenaean acropolis (13th century BC). You will see walls, foundations, traces of habitation, and if you are not a specialist, at first they may all look like “stones”. Do not be discouraged. Walk a little, read the information on site, visit the small museum and then look again. You will start to see everything differently.

And then there is the view. From up there, Sifnos spreads out around you. Villages, roads, hills, sea, dry-stone walls, churches, everything like a three-dimensional living map. If the atmosphere is clear, you will see Antiparos, Paros and Naxos, Sikinos, Folegandros… you will definitely stay longer than you planned. That happens often here.

Take water and a hat if it is summer, and a little willingness not to rush. Agios Andreas is not a place “to tick off”. It is a place to stand still.
